Crypto market shrinks 3.4% as Bitcoin heads for worst October in over a decade

Crypto market shrinks 3.4% as Bitcoin heads for worst October in over a decade

Summary

Bitcoin slipped to $77,234.51, a decline of 0.83% over the past day, as the broader market absorbed fallout from a security breach at Binance that attackers exploited to move stolen stablecoins before issuers could freeze them. Trading volume across crypto markets reached $78 billion in the past 24 hours, while Bitcoin's dominance of the total market held near 59.3%, suggesting investors rotated away from altcoins rather than fleeing the asset class entirely. Ether's share of the market stood at 10.4%.

Hyperliquid was among the session's most notable decliners, dropping 4.74% to $87.06 and shedding roughly $4.80 from its price in a single day, a sharper fall than most large-cap tokens. The token also appeared on CoinGecko's trending list with an even steeper 24-hour drop of 5.39% to $86.46, reflecting the volatility concentrated in high-profile decentralized trading platforms as the broader market reassessed risk following the exchange breach.

Ondo was the standout gainer among major tokens, rising 5.14% to $0.409, continuing a run that also placed it among trending searches with a 5.03% gain. Aave followed with a 4.74% increase to $131.02, and Uniswap rose 3.52% to $6.94. Chainlink and Bitcoin Cash posted smaller gains of 3.21% and 2.71%, respectively, suggesting selective buying interest in decentralized finance and infrastructure tokens even as the broader market retreated.

Among smaller tokens, Infinity Ground surged 57.33% to $0.269, the largest move across the trending list, though its market capitalization ranking of 446 points to thin liquidity behind the swing. Pearl and Collector Crypt posted the sharpest losses among trending names, falling 10.11% and 11.75% respectively, underscoring uneven conditions beneath the market's headline decline.

The pullback followed reports that stolen funds from the Binance breach were rapidly converted into assets that stablecoin issuers could not freeze, prompting Tether and Circle to move to immobilize billions in exposed holdings. Tether separately reported its excess reserves had nearly doubled to $8 billion with third-quarter profit of $1.5 billion, a disclosure that did little to offset broader market unease. Crypto-linked equities including Coinbase also declined sharply following the hack disclosure, compounding pressure that coincided with a wider technology-sector selloff and a decline in gold prices to their lowest level in a year.
